Thousands of secondary students across the county aren't in school today as the union continues with its industrial action.

Eight secondary schools in Clare are shut today as a result of today's industrial action, which looks set to run for at least a number of days.

ASTI members are refusing to carry out substitution and supervision duties, forcing the closure of schools on health and safety grounds.

The union's Clare representative is Peter Quinn, a teacher at St Flannan's College in Ennis.

He insists the government could easily resolve the dispute.

The Education Minister has accused the ASTI of blocking a pay rise for young teachers.

Members of the ASTI have refused to carry out supervision or substitution duties until they're paid an extra 6 Euro a week.

Minister Richard Bruton says their refusal to join the Lansdowne Road pay deal is hurting newly qualified staff.
