Clare’s Aontú representative has attributed a rise in reports of domestic abuse to a disconnect between Gardaí and their communities.
Figures obtained by Aontú show domestic abuse calls in the Clare-Tipperary Garda Division are up 214% within the last ten years, with 2,169 made up to November of this year compared to 690 in 2013.
Recently released Garda data, meanwhile, shows the number of Gardaí in this county has fallen by 13 in the last year alone.
Aontú Midwest Public Relations Officer Eric Nelligan believes that due to a decreased Garda presence in towns and villages, abusers aren’t afraid of the consequences of their actions.
