A Clare animal sanctuary is calling for the legislation to be changed around the ownership of exotic animals.
Founder of An Cat Dubh Sanctuary Dr Rhonda Lucas has written to the Gardaí in relation to welfare concerns around the zebra pictured at the Ennistymon Horse Fair at the weekend.

A person purporting to be the owner of the zebra has contacted Clare FM saying the National Park and Wildlife Service has visited them and has reported “no welfare issues” while claiming its passport and equine premises number are valid and it wasn’t imported illegally.
While it’s not illegal to own an exotic animal provided the owner has the correct paperwork, Dr Rhonda says their are ethical issues.
