A Clare-based member of the AGSI’s National Executive Committee is warning that little progress can be made unless Garda management tackles the retention and recruitment crisis.
The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors and the Garda Representative Association have poured cold water over whether Government plans to increase numbers to 15,000 in five years can be met.
The two Garda staff associations have also said the morale crisis among members stems from a belief that Garda management is “not listening” to their concerns.
Ennis-based Detective Sergeant Brian Howard says these concerns surround pay and pensions, social media, excess oversight and bureaucracy, workload, fatigue, work-related stress, excessive use of discipline and fear of complaints.
Detective Sergeant Howard insists Garda management must come to the table to find solutions towards making the job more attractive for both existing members and potential candidates.
