A Clare addiction counsellor says he has no doubt that more people will be contacting their service for help at a younger age on account of the new liecencing laws.
Earlier this week, the Government confirmed that Ireland’s 200 year old laws are changing to allow nightclubs and pubs open for longers hours.
Gerry Murphy of the Bushypark Addiction Centre has expressed shock and surprise at the move, saying it flies in the face of earlier legislation which aimed to reduce alcohol consumption.
He says we’re still struggling as a country to reduce out relationship with alcohol in a genuine way, and he’s concerned that exposing more people to alcohol for longer will create more problems, especially for young people.
