Workers at the Munster Regional Control Centre are said to be up in arms over a failure by Limerick City and County Council, which operates the centre, to engage with staff on issues relating to pay, conditions and treatment of workers.

The Limerick Leader reports that SIPTU is to ballot its members responsible for dispatching fire engines, on industrial action up to and including going on strike.

There are approximately 25 staff taking emergency calls for seven local council areas, covering a population of around 1.2 million people.

Fire fighting personnel are not part of the action, but will be affected as they are the only people with the ability to direct the emergency service.

Its reported that the issues staff are facing have been referred to the Workplace Relations Commission through SIPTU.
