Calls have been made for increased investment to be put towards regeneration of rural areas in East Clare.

Local Councillors say dereliction is an issue of particular concern in the region, with lack of broadband connectivity, poor road quality and the absence of basic services such as shops and post offices identified as key issues.

The recently announced ‘Elected Members of Killaloe Municipal District – Strategy & Work Plan’ aims to address a number of ongoing issues in the area.

Enhancing delivery of services to communities and citizens and sustainable mobility and connectivity to East Clare from the Mid-West region are among the aims, as well as tackling wastewater infrastructure deficits.

Bodyke Fine Gael Councillor Joe Cooney says the state of certain villages in East Clare is a “serious concern”.

A Maghera Councillor has highlighted that 52 towns and villages in the county do not have adequate water treatment infrastructure in place.
