A West Clare Councillor says rural roads here have effectively been "abandoned" when it comes to maintenance.

The comments from Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Hillery have come after local representatives expressed concern about the standard of roads here during a discussion on a nationwide survey which found "severe structural defects" in 22% of the county's rural routes.
Government funding for roadwork grants have fallen by 42% since 2008, and the Council estimates that it would take at least 100 million euro to reverse the damage caused since then.
