New CSO figures which outline the number of homes being bought in the west of the county suggest that younger people in rural parts of the county can't afford to setup home there, or are choosing to do so elsewhere.

"The Government has taken the heart out of West Clare".

That's the message today as new figures show the extent of rural depopulation in the county.

The CSO data shows that only six homes were sold to or built by first-time buyers in a large portion of West Clare, in the last year, compared with 177 in other parts of the county.

In Kilrush, 4% of homes went to people who have never owned a house before while 47% were bought by non-occupiers, likely for the purpose of renting them or for use as holiday homes.

Local Councillor Ian Lynch says the number of younger families who wish to move out of the area is becoming incresingly concerning.

The Kilbaha-based founder of Rural Resettlement believes that far too much emphasis is being placed on providing support for farming communities.

Jim Connolly believes the key to boosting population is to attract various trades people or crafts people who can create their own employment.

The Inagh-based CEO of Muintir na Tíre believes the major factor driving depopulation is the lack of Government policy regarding rural communities.

Niall Garvey believes a plan needs to be set in place to drive these areas forward.
