A Clonlara resident says she and her family have been forced to fund the cost of flood defences for their home themselves due to a lack of progress on the issue in recent months.

Gerardine Quinlivan is commenting following a protest in Athlone yesterday, which coincided with a public session on flood management for the river Shannon.

A number of OPW-led meetings have taken place in recent months aimed at dealing with the flooding crisis that has crippled many families living along the river Shannon, the most recent of which was in Athlone yesterday.

Farmers voiced their anger over the CFRAMS Flood Management Plan, saying that no work has been done to avoid a repeat of the damage caused by the severe floods last winter.

The IFA has criticised the report, saying it focusses on towns and villages, while ignoring rural areas and farmland and that environmental concerns are overriding the public good.

Clare IFA County Chairman Willie Hanrahan says the whole process of maintaining the river Shannon has been stalled by red tap and he believes it's time for all relevant bodies to come together and begin dealing with the problem.

A Clonlara resident says her family have been forced to fund the cost of flood defences for their home themselves, amidst fears that Springfield will become submerged in flood waters once again this winter.

Gerardine Quinlivan says she's been told by residents in Killaloe that water levels in Lough Derg are now higher than traditionally seen at this time of year and she fears this doesn't bode well for the coming months.

Another meeting is due to take place in Killaloe in September but Gerardine says the time for talking is now over and that action is now needed.
