Claims Symphysiotomies Were Performed In Good Faith

A former master of a maternity hospital says he believes symphysiotomies were performed on women in Ireland 'in good faith'.

Sam Coulter Smith, who's a former master of the Rotunda in Dublin believes doctors acted to try and save babies' lives and prevent some horrific complications for mothers.

A support group yesterday branded a report into the practice 'an official whitewash'. 

However Dr Coulter Smith  says symphysiotomies were carried out on women facing a very difficult 'obstructed labour'
