It’s claimed various peatland rewetting projects across Clare is resulting in attitude changes around the uses of bogs in rural parts of the county.
The Knocknahila Bog, the home to two rare birds, the merlin and the hen harrier, is being rewetted to provide a wildlife sanctuary for the conservation of protected species.
It’s the second community led project of its kind and the first of which will be untaken in the west of the county.
Speaking on Clare FM’s Morning Focus, Clare County Council’s Biodiversity Officer, Barry O’Loughlin, says there’s now more awareness of the alternative functions of peat bogs amidst the climate crisis.
