It’s claimed an ineffective fining system in Clare is to blame for the latest spate of illegal dumping.
Bottle banks in Shannon were overfilled last week, leading to a large quantity of excess bottles being discarded on the ground.
This incident has been highlighted by members of the Shannon Community Group last week, after a build up of bottles in the area outside the Garda station.
It’s understood the issue arose after the supplier responsible for emptying the bottle banks was delayed due to the fallout of Storm Éowyn.
At present, the fine for illegal dumping stands at €150 but one Councillor claims the process for following up on these offences is not cost affective for the local authority.
Cratloe Fianna Fail Councillor Pat O’Gorman believes the fining system doesn’t work, while the penalty for illegal dumping is not high enough.
Meanwhile, a Shannon councillor claims more responsibility needs to be taken by the public for the appearance of the town.
Glass bottle waste can also be disposed of free of charge at the Shannon Recycling Centre and local Fine Gael Councillor, Tony Mulcahy says he’s in disbelief as to why people have to be constantly educated on keeping the town litter free.
