The Chief Operating Officer of Aer Lingus claims the introduction of transatlantic flights from Cork could have a negative impact on Shannon.

It follows confirmation that Norwegian Air International is to establish services from Shannon and Cork to North America after receiving its transatlantic permit from the US Department of Transport.

Mike Rutter has said that he doesn't believe that Dublin will be impacted by the plans but that Shannon's position as a carrier for Aer Lingus passengers to Boston and New York, as well as London's Heathrow and Gatwick may be affected.

But he says that historically, Aer Lingus has been committed to serving New York and Boston and that the company will do it's best to ensure that the impact is as minimal as possible.
