Calls are being made for Clare to follow the lead of other local authorities in the rollout of CCTV.
It comes as Garda security camera usage is expected to spike in the coming years.
Currently, Ireland ranks just 18th out of 35 EU member states in CCTV camera usage.
The Irish Independent reports that Dublin is set to increase its number of Garda CCTV cameras by 100 in the coming years, while Cork City has fewer than 50 currently in operation.
A €40,000 scheme in Roscommon saw 26 cameras installed across 15 locations in Ballaghaderreen, funded by the local town team.
Newmarket-on-Fergus Fianna Fáil Councillor, David Griffin, says Clare County Council should consider similar programmes on a town by town basis.
However, it’s claimed a lack of Government funding is a greater obstacle to CCTV implementation than GDPR legislation.
An eight week pilot scheme for the installation of cameras in dumping blackspots in Kilrush and Tulla was proposed earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Clare’s Local Community Safety Partnership has frequently heard calls for the rollout of CCTV cameras across Ennis.
Clarecastle Sinn Féin Councillor and LCSP member, Tommy Guilfoyle, says the council and Gardaí in Clare are severely underfunded to appropriately install surveillance systems.
