A former Mayor insists CCTV surveillance is required to fight the ongoing battle against litter in this county.
With over 800 complaints made about littering and illegal dumping in Clare so far this year, Clare County Council has requested that the Local Government Management Agency permit the use of CCTV and drones to combat the problem.
Using surveillance of this nature for environmental reasons is permitted under the Circular Economy and Miscellanous Provisions Act and the legislation is due to be presented for approval to the Minister for the Environment in November.
Clarecastle Fine Gael Councillor Paul Murphy, who brought the issue to the fore at a recent meeting of the local authority, says the issue has got to the point that CCTV is the only recourse.
