A centenary event marking one of the most important encounters of the War of Independence has been cancelled, in light of the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Rineen Ambush, carried out by the Irish Republican Army near Miltown Malbay in September 1920, resulted in a Royal Irish Constabulary lorry being ambushed and six officers being killed.

The centenary of the event was due to be marked in September, but organisers have deferred that event until next year, and are instead planning for a virtual event of some kind.
Chair of the Mid-Clare Brigade Commemoration Committee, Mary Crawford, says that the event was to be significant locally, and nationally.
