Census Figures Show Clare Commuter Trends

More than half of Clare’s commuters have journeys of half an hour or less to work or school.

The latest figures from last year’s census, which have just been published show around 28,000 people can get to their destination in 15 minutes or less, while a further 20,000 take between 15 and 30 minutes.

The CSO figures show that of the 118,000 people living in Clare, 72,000 aged 5 and older are in school, college or work.

A commute of 15 minutes or less is the most common in the county, while just over a thousand spend 90 minutes or more commuting each way every day.

The use of a car is the favourite way to get to work with over 34,000 driving in every day – while almost 8,000 walk.

The figures also show that over half of Clare’s total population, including minors, are listed as “single” – 60,000 in total.

There are 47,000 who are married or in a civil partnership, while 2,600 are divorced and 5,300 widowed.

Meanwhile, Banner women outnumber their male counterparts – there are 60,000 females living in this county versus 58,000 males.

It also seems Clare isn’t a stronghold for Gaeilgóirs – more than half of the population here claim not to be able to speak Irish at all – while just 1,000 say they use Irish as their daily language at home.
