A cautious welcome is being given locally to a planned programme of maintenance works along the River Shannon.

The Shannon Flood Risk Group has announced it will put together a strategy to deal with problems including the build up of silt and vegetation, in an effort to tackle flooding along the 11,500 kilometres of river channel.

The OPW-led group says it will consult with relevant authorities and local residents, to put together a plan which takes into account all legal, environmental and technical challenges which may arise.

Gerardine Quinlivan of Springfield, Clonlara, who was forced from her home by the flooding last winter, says while the plan is step forward, it's important it's done in a way that doesn't make the situation worse.
