The 36-year-old father of three was shot dead in the line of duty while responding to a domestic disturbance call in Omeath last Sunday.

The requiem mass will take place at noon – and will be attended by the President, the Taoiseach and the Garda Commissioner.

The body of Garda Tony Golden was yesterday returned to his wife Nicola and his three young children Lucy, Alex and Andrew. He lay in repose at their family home ahead of today’s service.

The 36-year-old has been hailed as a hero by the family of domestic violence victim Siobhan Philipps – who say he laid down his life to protect her. They say there are ‘no words to express’ their gratitude for his bravery.

President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Enda Kenny – along with the Garda Commissioner and Justice Minister – will join Tony Golden’s family, friends and colleagues for requiem mass at the Church of St Oliver Plunkett in Blackrock at noon.

Large crowds are expected to gather outside for the full State funeral – which will come ahead of a private burial at St Paul’s Cemetery in Heynestown.

The Golden family have asked that instead of flowers – donations can be made to the North Louth Hospice and Homecare Foundation.

Meanwhile,

The Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council is encouraging people to sign books of condolances opened following the tragic death of Garda Tony Golden and of ten people in the Carrickmines fire.

The two books are open at Áras Chontae an Chláir on the New Road in Ennis from 9am until 5pm each weekday – up to and including – Friday October 23rd.

While, two more books of condolances have been opened at Ennis and Shannon Garda Stations on a twenty-four hour basis.

Councillor James Breen says our hearts go out to those affected by the tragedies
