Carey Calls For U.S. President To Make St. Patrick’s Day Visit To Ireland

A Clare government TD is calling for the US President to be invited to Ireland for the 2022 St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, instead of the Taoiseach travelling to the U.S.

It’s been a long-standing tradition that the Taoiseach of the day would travel to Washington D.C. for a meeting in the White House.

But Fine Gael TD Joe Carey has suggested that Ireland could get a tourism boost, if Donald Trump or Joe Biden were invited to Ireland instead.

Deputy Carey has called for the visit to be reversed, and made his comments during a broader discussion in which he suggested that Ireland’s centenary of Independence in 2022 could be used as the basis of a marketing tool for the country, similar to the Gathering in 2013.
