Carey Calls For Rent Pressure Zone To Be Considered In Clare

A Clare Fine Gael TD has said that he feels at least parts of the county should be considered for designation as Rent Pressure Zones.

It comes as the latest index from the Residential Tenancies Board puts the average monthly rent in this county at almost €700 – a 10-year high.

The average rental home in Clare now goes for €689 per month – that’s a rise of €41 in the space of a year and is the highest rate seen here since 2008.

The RTB’s rental index shows that Clare is still well below the national average of €1,094 per month, but that takes cities into consideration too.

As things stand, there are 21 Rent Pressure Zones nationwide, where a landlord can’t raise rates by more than 4% per year, and rising rental costs have led to calls for this measure to cover the entire country.

Clarecastle Fine Gael TD Joe Carey says it’s time to look at putting one in place here to help tenants cope.
Concern is also being expressed in Clare about the knock-on impact on the buyers market, as well as the effect it’s having on the vision of Clare as a place to do business.

Cormac O’Sullivan from DNG O’Sullivan Hurley Auctioneers in Ennis fears that the situation with housing here is going to be a deterrent to investors.
