A Clare Fine Gael TD claims the onus is on all stakeholders to ensure the retention of the Ennis to Athenry rail line.

The future of the line came into question this week after a review of Irish rail's finances found it to be one of the worst performing in the country but the Transport Minister has since ruled out the immediate closure of any rail lines.

Joe Carey insists that having a rail service along the west cost is vital in acheiving a counterpole to Dublin and he believes that more could have been done by Irish Rail to promote the service.

Figures show 102,000 people used the Ennis to Athenry rail service last year and Deputy Carey is urging everyone to come together to ensure that it's kept in place.
