Candidates Say There’s No Room From Complacency Following Clare Opinion Poll

Clare's election candidates say there's no room for complacency over the coming week as the race for a Dáil seat continues.

It comes following a new poll which shows that Clare's Labour TD Michael McNamara and Fine Gael TD Joe Carey could narrowly lose out on keeping their seats to Independent Dr Michael Harty and Sinn Féin's Noeleen Moran.

Some of the county's election candidates have been reacting positively to today's poll which points to a shake up within the Clare constituency.

The Clare Champion poll, undertaken by LIT, sought the views of 660 likely voters in face to face interviews, at fourteen sample points across Clare, between Friday and Sunday last with an overall margin of error of 5%.

The poll indicates that Fine Gael TD Pat Breen and Fianna Fáil's Timmy Dooley will retain their seats, but it places Labour TD Michael McNamara and Fine Gael's Joe Carey in fifth and sixth position respectively, narrowly missing out on keeping their seat.

Despite this Michael McNamara says he's encouraged by the results of the poll and that he's still in with a chance of a seat despite a difficult number of years for the people of Clare.

Fine Gael's Joe Carey remains positive but he has cast doubt over the poll, saying the results don't collate with the reception he's been receiving on the doorstep.

Dr Michael Harty has emerged as the dark horse in the race, who alongside Sinn Féin's Noeleen Moran could gain the remaining two seats.

The poll indicates Dr Harty is the most transfer friendly candidate but he says now is not the time to become complacent and there's still plenty of campaigning left to do.

Mid-table candidates include Fianna Fáil's Clare Colleran Molloy on 5.67%, Michael McDonagh on 5.06%, Green Party candidate Fergal Smith on 3.68% and Fine Gael's Mary Howard and Independent Ian Lynch both on just over 3%.

Clare Colleran Molloy is optimistic ahead of polling day, saying with correct vote management, Fianna Fail can secure two seats in Clare.

The lower end of the table sees Independent Ann Norton on 2.61%, Fís Nua's Niamh O'Brien on 1.84%, Independents Richard Cahill on 1.53%, Andre Sibo Hakizimana on 0.61% and Dermot Mulqueen on 0.31%

The campaign continues and the poll that matters in eight days time.
