Campaigners Reflect On Yes Vote In Marriage Referendum

Equality campaigners in Clare have been reacting positively to the county's yes vote in the Marriage Referendum.

 
58.3 per cent of people voted in favour of the Referendum, in line with the national figure.
 
Clare Campaigners for a NO vote have also been reflecting on the results which one Government TD described as a milestone in the history of our state.
 
There's been positive reaction to the yes vote in the Marriage referendum with campaigners from both sides saying that while they were not surprised it passed, the high number of yes votes was not expected.
 
Only 18 areas in Clare rejected the marriage referendum as well as the postal vote and by a narrow margin. 
 
Clare Fine Gael TD Pat Breen says there's no doubt that the vote has been a milestone in the history of our state.
 
Local equality campaigner Orla Vaughan says waking up as an equal in her county for the first time in almost four decades has been the most powerful experience she has ever gone through.
 
41.7 per cent of people in Clare voted No to the referendum.
 
Speaking on Clare Fm's Morning Focus, Ennis Solicitor Brian McMahon, who campaigned for the no side says he's not surprised by the result but says there's now a need for reflection on the teachings of marriage.
 
Bernadette Kenny and her partner Heidy Hummel were first Clare couple to register a same sex civil partnership under the new Civil Partnership Bill which became law in early 2011.
 
Bernadette says the vote must be a message of hope for young people.
