Calls For Long-Term Solution To Water Shortages In North Clare ‘Pinch Points’

A North Clare Councillor insists Irish Water needs to explore a long-term solution to water shortage issues in the county’s ‘pinch points’.

Carran is one of twelve areas across the company being closely monitored by the facility following record temperatures earlier in the week.

Irish Water says steps are being taken to bolster supply in parts of North Clare after the hot weather.

 

The utility says that since the middle of last week it has seen a noticeable increase in demand, particularly in seaside resorts and agricultural areas, with demand likely to remain high through July and August.

Carran is one of twelve areas across the country where water tankering and nighttime restrictions are in place to combat low ground water levels.

Supplies in Fanore and New Quay are also coming under pressure.

Irish Water says the dry conditions experienced this year is to blame for water supply issues in the region.

However, Corofin Fianna Fáil Councillor Joe Killeen says a solution may already be on the cards.

Councillor Killeen wants another well in the area reinvestigated to see if it would be a possible alternative.
