Figures have emerged showing the council are currently paying back some 101 million euro worth of loans from 10 different institutions, at the cost of over 11 million per year.

There were angry scenes at a recent council meeting as Councillor PJ Kelly clashed with Caoitherleach James Breen when he questioned the rate of interest being paid.

Councillor Kelly says he has no issue with the council raising loans for various projects, but he wants to ensure the best deal is being secured.
