Calls are being made for lessons on mental health to be incorporated into the education system.

It comes after new figures showed that the number of suicides in Clare remains worryingly high.

There were 18 suicides registered in Clare last year – 17 of those were men, a figure high enough to make the rate of male suicide in Clare the highest of any county in Ireland.

This comes in spite of extensive efforts locally to tackle the issues surrounding suicide, including by Milltown Malbay GP Dr. Billy O'Connell of the West Clare Taking Care group.

He thinks the time has come for schools to come on board and for lessons on mental health to be incorporated into childrens' education.

Another local campaigner agrees, and says schools can only come on board if given the necessary supports.

Meanwhile, amid the worrying figures surrounding male suicides, a particular call has been issued for men here to reach out for support before it's too late.
