The Environment Minister’s being urged to take action to help struggling Clare businesses crippled by rates.
Up to 30 representatives from the Shannon business and voluntary sector made an impassioned plea to county council representatives last night seeking some form of financial relief.
They say current commercial, water and refuse charges are crippling local companies with up to 400 already forced to close their doors and are seeking a cut in the local authority’s upcoming budget.
Councillors say a reduction in rates is unlikely and that certain cuts would require a change in legislation.
Shannon Independent Councillor Gerry Flynn is calling on the Environment Minister Phil Hogan to fast track such measures in order to protect small businesses
