The government’s being urged to approve an exemption order that would allow the Breastcheck Programme to be rolled out in Clare this year.

The scheme due to be rolled out in the county in the coming months has been put on hold due to the recruitment freeze in the public sector.

Breastcheck says it’s identified suitable radiographers to operate the Clare Unit, and have the money to fund the programme but are unable to hire staff due to the embargo.

They have applied to the Health Department for a special exemption to be allowed proceed making the necessary appointments; however it’s not known when a response is likely.

Killaloe Cancer Survivor and patient advocate Rebecca O’Malley says Breastcheck is a vital service and must be rolled out in Clare as soon as possible.
