North Clare local elected representatives are telling the firm responsible for the delivery of public realm works worth almost €1.4 million in a North Clare town to pick up the pace amid frustration locally.
With a road closure in place and hoarding erected at various locations across the town, traders are complaining that business is suffering due to reduced footfall.
More than seven months on from the completion of the Ennis public realm works, which took almost two years and prompted plenty of criticism, a similar project in Ennistymon is stirring up familiar concerns.
Clare County Council awarded Lissycasey-based construction company Lymar Contracts Limited a €1.37 million contract for the delivery of public realm enhancement works in the town in January of this year.
The project includes the upgrading of footpaths, paving, streetlights and street furniture on Parliament Street, the Square, Church Street and McInerney’s Lane.
Parliament Street has been closed since April 20th to facilitate the works and was due to reopen on July 31st – but the closure has now been extended to August 28th.
Ennistymon Fianna Fáil Councillor Shane Talty doesn’t believe the approach being taken by the contractor is making life easy for businesses.
The frustration arising from the works was the subject of a discussion at this week’s meeting of the West Clare Municipal District.
Among the main bugbears of local representatives are that the works aren’t taking place seven days a week and that sections of the project have been started before others have been finished.
Lahinch Fine Gael Councillor Bill Slattery wants to see the improvements delivered in a more efficient manner.
