Calls For Automatic Speed Limiters To Be Trialled In Clare Passenger Cars

A Clare TD is calling for speed limit appeals to be streamlined and for the five-year local authority mandatory reviews to be scrapped.

It comes as the Government has passed new legislation that will allow the RSA and An Garda Síochána to share specific road traffic collision data with county and city councils.

The main crux of the legislation will be sharing details about road traffic collisions , such as location, speed of vehicles and cause to better inform local authorities so targeted investment and upgrades can be made.

The new laws also make provision for getting rid of paper tax discs, in favour of a digital model.

The bill has been drafted by Ministers Darragh O’Brien and Sean Canney and will soon go before the Dáil and Seanad for approval.

Better Ennis has been among the campaign groups calling for the move and Spokesperson Ciarán Tiernan says it’s urgently needed.

Local authorities previously had access to similar data, but due to GDPR issues, this has not happened for over six years.

A Clare TD however believes there’s other obstacles, particularly the timeline of mandatory speed limit reviews, which are generally only carried out every five years.

Meelick Fianna Fáil Deputy Cathal Crowe insists these should be expedited, but also wants to see automatic speed limiters trialled in passenger cars based on technology already available at the Future Mobility Campus in Shannon.
