Calls dropped for Assad to quit UN resolution

Arab nations have dropped a demand for President Assad to quit from a UN resolution on the Syrian conflict, which will be voted on today.

The draft – prepared by the Arab League and western supporters – calls for an end to the use of heavy weapons and the withdrawal of troops from urban areas.

But an Arab diplomat told AFP News Agency that the draft of the resolution has been toned down to secure as much support as possible – and put more pressure on the Assad regime.

The vote comes a day after UN peace envoy Kofi Annan resigned from his role.
