The first round of public consultation for the Shannon Town Masterplan took place during a seven-week period from July 16th to September 3rd.

The feedback received during this timeframe has been used to inform the final draft of the plan, which is now on display until Christmas week.

The draft Plan includes plans for an improved main street, the creation of a new town square, and a mixed use of residential and commercial units in the town centre.

While the final draft has been praised for taking the public’s suggestions into account, concerns still remain over certain elements of the document.

Martin McNeilus of the Love Shannon Community Council foresees issues with plans to remove parking.

A member of the working group for the Venue in Shannon believes it’s positive the Council have agreed to take ownership of the One Shannon Hub.

The Hub will incorporate the elements of the previously proposed Venue, which was to be a cultural and civic centre.

However, Kevin Thompstone, the former president of Shannon Chamber, insists the next step is to create a timeline for the delivery of the project.

Meanwhile, a Senior Planner with the local authority has expressed hope the implementation of the plan can begin next year.

Brian McCarthy confirmed the plan is hoped to be adopted by County Councillors in January.

However, Brian says the feedback from the public will have to be taken on board and that this will take time.
