Calls For More Compassion In Medical Card System

The Seanad has heard claims that people in the MidWest who are terminally ill are receiving multiple letters from the HSE asking whether they are still sick.

The claim has come from Limerick Fine Gael Senator Maria Byrne, who has raised issues with the medical card system.

Last year, there were 25 medical card appeals from the MidWest submitted to the HSE’s national appeals office, which sided with the patient in each of those cases.

The government insists the system is compassionate, but Senator Byrne feels there are still too many issues.
