Battlefield sites in Cratloe, Kilalloe and Rineen could be declared protected sites under a new proposal by a Meelick based Councillor.
Protective status currently can only be placed on a physical structure but Fianna Fail Councillor Cathal Crowe argues that needs to be changed following a visit to the Kilmicheal Ambush site in County Cork.

Excavators removed large amounts of material without an archelogical survey and altered the site to make it more attractive for tourists.
The protective status of open areas is to be raised in the Seanad, and history enthusiast Cathal Crowe says the situation needs to change.
