Call For Study Of Shannon Estuary After Concerns Over Threat To Dolphins

The Marine Institute is being called on to urgently carry out a study of the Shannon Estuary to protect the dolphin pod living there.

The acting CEO of the Kilrush-based Irish Whale and Dolphin Group has echoed concerns raised by Kilrush Councillor Ian Lynch, on behalf of tourism operators, over the threat by trawlers to bottlenose dolphins living in the estuary.

There has been increased activity near Moneypoint in recent days, by these fishing vessels, who are within their legal rights to drag the water with large nets.

But Dr Simon Berrow believes that until the threat to local marine life is identified, fishing should stop.
