Calls are being made for the River Fergus to be dyed green for St Patrick’s Day next year.

Ennis Councillor Mary Howard wants to see the county town’s river follow the example of those in some of the larger cities around the world, including the likes of Dublin and Chicago.

Vegetable dye is used to change the colour of the water, which breaks down after a number of hours, and Councillor Howard says it could happen for next year.

Concerns have been raised over the cost, with a meeting of the local authority hearing that 3,000 euro an hour would be required to achieve the effect, but Fine Gael Councillor Howard doesn’t believe it would be that high.
