Health inspectors say residents of Cahercalla Community Hospital feel ‘safe and well looked after’ at the facility.
The HIQA report follows previous assertions that the centre had an ‘inadequate system of governance and management, which is acknowledged to have been largely addressed.
This unannounced inspection at Cahercalla took place on the 16th of March last over a single day period.
The report states that Cahercalla has had ‘significant engagement’ with the provider since May 2019, and that it has had a ‘poor history of compliance and regulations’.
HIQA says its chief inspector had issued a notice of proposal to cancel the centre’s registration, but a representation made by Cahercalla afterwards outlined changes it has made to its organisational structure.
On this occasion, of the 11 areas assessed, the Ennis facility was deemed either ‘compliant’ or ‘substantially compliant’ in 8 of them.
Health inspectors acknowledged a new system of documentation had been introduced, with a management system being brought in that they said ensures Cahercalla’s service will be ‘safe, appropriate, consistent and effectively monitored’ going forward.
The three areas deemed non-compliant were in staffing, training and development and individual assessments and care plans.
The nursing home says a comprehensive review of its rosters has taken place, a weekly audit of documentation is now to be introduced for care plans, and recruitment is ongoing to fill a number of Clinical Nurse Manager roles.
