The Cabinet’s health sub-committee is to meet today to discuss immediate steps which can be taken to address a budgetary overspend within the HSE.

Spending on healthcare has over-run by 281 million euro, and during the troika’s review of Ireland’s bailout, the need to tackle the health over-spend was specifically mentioned.
The cabinet’s already vetoed cost-cutting proposals from the executive itself, which included targeting mental health budgets and curtailing elective admissions.
But the HSE’s limited in the changes it CAN make, particularly on overtime, by the terms of the Croke Park deal.
