Cabinet to approve cut in Dáil Deputy numbers

Legislation to reduce the number of TDs in the Dáil  is likely to be approved by government ministers at today’s final Cabinet meeting before the summer recess.

The cut would see the number of deputies reduced from 166 to 158-

Ministers are also likely to discuss proposals to cut the number of town councils nationwide which could spell bad news for a number of such urban authorities in Clare – however its unclear if Cabinet will sign off on the proposed shake-up of local government.

As the smallest of the four Clare towns which has it’s own Council, Kilkee representative Lily Marrinan Sullivan admits any cuts are likely to hit the West Clare town.
