Fears that Clare’s rural transport service could be abolished or amalgamated with another county have been allayed.
As part of plans unveiled today to overhaul the network nationwide – Clare Accessible Transport has been given a direct award to operate as a standalone service in the county.
Its set to be one of 18 such units nationwide that will co-ordinate the running of transport services locally which see also see it awarding hackney licences in the county.
Other schemes across the country have been amalgamated in an effort to streamline costs but Clare Labour TD Michael McNamara says the service here is safe.
Chairman of Clare Accessible Transport Ger Hoey has welcomed the Minister’s announcement that they are going to be a standalone service and hope to maintain and extend the service.
Further details of the 18 new units will be discussed with the various groups over the coming months and Ger Hoey hopes it won’t see a reduction in funding and is fearful that as time goes on state funding could be reduced
