Business Leaders To Sleep Rough Tonight To Highlight Homlessness

Focus Ireland is calling on the Government to take immediate action on homelessness. 

The charity is holding it's annual sleep out today as it says over 1,500 children are now in need of a home.

125 Business leaders from across the country will sleep rough tonight in Cork and Dublin in an effort to place the spotlight on the numbers of people who will spend the cold winter months sleeping on the streets. 

While Focus Ireland has also launched a social campaign – encouraging people to post a picture of their shadows – in the hope of bringing homeless people out of the dark.

Meanwhile, The Tanaiste has proposed the establishment of a rent regulator.

It comes as the Environment Minister Alan Kelly and the Finance Minister Michael Noonan try to agree on how best to tackle the housing crisis.

Minister Kelly wants to link rent to inflation – but the Tanaiste Joan Burton has suggested a rent regulator, with powers to influence the size of rents instead.

The proposal will be considered at a Cabinet sub-committee meeting next week.
