Burton To Issue Budget Call To EC

The Tanaiste is to call on the European Commission to ease the rules that restrict Ireland's budget spending.

In a speech in the US tonight, Joan Burton will argue that the government's expecting to have extra cash available next year, and that it should be allowed spend it on measures inlcuding tax cuts, education and infrastructure.

Rules currently in place mean the revenue is earmarked for debt reduction – the Tanaiste is expected to call on the European Commision to show some 'flexibility' on the issue.

She'll also tell the audience that the government won't take actions that would put the economy at risk, and there will be no 'splurge'.
