Minister for Arts and Heritage Jimmy Deenihan will accept the ‘European Diploma of Protected Areas Award’ from the Council of Europe for sustainable management of the Burren at an event at the Michael Cusack Centre in Carron this morning.

Created in 1965, 72 of these Diplomas have been awarded to areas in 28 European countries, but never before to an Irish region.

The honour recognises the European significance of the Burren, as well as schemes like the Burren Farming for Conservation Programme, the Burren Connect project, the Burrenbeo Trust.
