Bunratty Housing Plans Appealed To An Coimisúin Pleanála Amid Tourism Fears

Plans for a landmark housing development in Bunratty have been appealed to An Coimisúin Pleanála.

It comes just one month after Clare County Council gave the green light for 67 homes at the site of the former Shannon Shamrock Hotel.

The saga started all the way back last December when Crescent House Limited applied for permission to build 47 three-bed homes and 20 two-bed dwellings on a 2.9 hectare site in Bunratty.

The planning was subsequently granted in late September after a protracted process which saw over 35 public submissions lodged with the council.

The major controversy is the site in question, that of the former Shannon Shamrock, once a thriving Hotel, but has been derelict now for over a decade.

Among those now taking their objections to An Coimisúin Pleanála is Geraldine Lillis, who claims the plans detract from the
main theme of the village and does not provide hotel beds for tourists to contribute to the local economy.

The statement also claims that issues around amenities and traffic management remain while there is not enough capacity at local creches, primary or secondary schools to support the inevitable population growth.

Another statement from local resident Mike Fitzpatrick says that other suitable sites are available for housing and reaffirms that a hotel is needed to support regional tourism.

The Bunratty Community Development Group is the final appellant and has stated that the plans contravene zoning objectives of the Clare County Development Plan.

ACP has eight weeks to make a decision.
