Belgium's Prime Minister says the move follows "quite precise information about the risk of an attack like the one that happened in Paris".

The underground system has been closed and people in the capital are being urged to avoid busy areas.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council has backed a motion authorising "all necessary measures" to combat Islamic State.

Council members voted unanimously for the French proposal, tabled in the wake of the Paris terror attacks.

It calls on member countries to "coordinate their efforts to prevent and suppress terrorist attacks"

Former Taoiseach John Bruton says it's a welcome sign of unity among world leaders
