Brexit Blamed For Decline In Clare Car Sales

Brexit is being blamed for a fall-off in the sale of new cars.

The number of new vehicles registered in Clare and across the country fell last month.

123 new cars were sold in Clare in August, according to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry.

This is 20 less than in the same month last year, and brings the total number of new cars sold in the Banner to over 2600.

While that figure is higher than what was recorded during the recession, it is 13% less than at the same time in 2016 and the trend of falling car sales is replicated in every county in Ireland, with many recording even bigger declines.

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry say Brexit is to blame, as the weaker sterling has made imports cheaper.

over 62,000 cars have been imported into Ireland this year and SIMI says the declining market means there should be no negative tax decisions in terms of VRT, road tax or fuel in next month’s Budget.
