Meanwhile, Clare Fine Gael have selected Pat Breen and Joe Carey to represent the party at the next General Election.
But at least one more candidate could be added in the aftermath of last night’s hastily arranged gathering in Ennis.
Clare Fm’s Gavin Grace has more:
There was a somewhat unusual scene at last night’s Fine Gael convention, which saw many grassroots members monitoring developments on the future of Frances Fitzgerald on their phones, while selecting the candidates that could be representing the party in a General Election within a matter of weeks.
Pat Breen, Joe Carey and Martin Conway were all nominated, but the Ennistymon Senator stood aside while still making it clear that he wants to make a bid for the Dáil.
So two candidates selected, but more could be added. That’s up to the National Executive. Deputy Carey is leaving the decision up to them.
The aim of Clare Fine Gael is clear – they’re looking to retain both of the seats in Clare that they won narrowly just last Spring.
