Mr Ó Céidigh was named as the Group’s Chair back in September, in a move that was broadly welcomed by this county’s Oireachtas members and tourism industry stakeholders.

Now, six months to the date from his appointment, he has relinquished his duties.

It’s understood Mr Ó Céidigh’s resignation letter to Minister Ryan cited other work commitments as the driving force behind his decision.

The founder of Aer Arann Express and Aer Lingus Regional has told Clare FM that he believes it would be “more than a full-time job to do the role to the degree and detail required, given the circumstances, to get the airport to reach its potential”.

Mr Ó Céidigh had filled a role that had been vacant for more than a year following the end of Rose Hynes’ tenure back in August 2020.

He had stated his main aim was to restore pre-pandemic traffic and passenger numbers at Shannon Airport by 2024.

Focus will now turn to filling the role once more, with the Department of Transport expected to outline its intentions om how it plans to undertake a recruitment process shortly.
